Born in the Bronx, Spencer Reed started playing jazz and blues professionally at age 18 when he first freelanced as a drummer and guitarist for a local New York band known as The Soul Distributers. In 1976 he found himself in the Poconos for a gig through an agent with New York connections. He moved to Tamiment, PA on a day’s notice, not knowing anything about the area. Now quite a fixture on the local jazz and blues scene, he performs at the annual Celebration of the Arts (COTA) that put Delaware Water Gap on the jazz map, and teaches at Camp Jazz, a summertime program for high school students who perform at COTA. Spencer also gives private lessons in guitar and drums for all age groups. He lives in Stroudsburg with his wife Nancy (a renowned jazz singer and bassist) and their daughter.
