The Dorflinger Wildlife Sanctuary And Glass Museum
A small town in northeastern Pennsylvania called White Mills contains a pristine wildlife sanctuary on land formerly owned by Christian Dorflinger. Dorflinger was the owner of Dorflinger Glassworks, a cut glass business that had tremendous success in its early years.  His glassworks were in business from 1852 to 1921, putting White Mills on the map. The handsome home and property that would become the Dorflinger Wildlife Sanctuary and Glass Museum was at one time where Dorflinger lived though he preferred to be in town. It was owned by other members of his family in later years. It eventually passed to his Grandson, Frederick Dorflinger Suydam.

Lenni Lena’Pe ~ The True People Of The Poconos
Long before Europeans, the Lenni Lena’pe called this area home. These Native Americans were the first inhabitants of the Pocono Mountains, having settled in the area over 10,000 year ago. Lena’pe is pronounced “Leh-NAH-pay” and it means “the people.” Sometimes you will see this name spelled Lenape, Lenápe or Lena’pi. The tribe is also known as the Lenni Lena’pe which translates to “true people” or the Delaware Indians after the Delaware River – The River of Human Beings, which runs through Lenni Lena’pe territory. The word Pocono in the native Lena’pe tongue means “a river between two mountains.” The Lena’pe did not have a written language; their history was passed from generation to generation by storytellers.

Stourbridge Line on Track to Make Comeback in May

Approximately three years after shutting down, it looks like the Stourbridge Line is back on track to provide train service to the Honesdale, Hawley, and Lackawaxen area.

 

According to Gail Tucker, executive director of the Greater Honesdale Partnership, the train is expected to be back up and running in early May to coincide with National Train Days, May 9-10, 2015.

 

To begin, excursion rides will be operated between Honesdale, Hawley and Lackawaxen. Freight service may later be added.
